Today I tried something new for the first time. It’s not often that happens when you’re already half a century old.
What is a Winter Date?
A Winter Date or Jujube is like a mini purple and green apple, and tastes like an apple. The Winter jujube is smooth-green when immature, and turn brown to purplish-black when maturing. It has a crispy texture with an edible thin skin which surrounds a white fleshy interior. It has a small date like stone in the centre. It is sweet tasting like an apple but very small and can easily fly into the palm of your hand.
Where are they from?
They originated from China and they have been cultivated for more than 4000 years. They are usually available in October.
What is the Nutritional value?
They are very high in vitamin C – about 70 times that of an apple and 16 times that of citrus fruits. They are rich in amino acids, aspartic acid, threonine, serine and other 19 kinds of amino acids. They also contain Vitamin B6, Vitamin B3, Iron, Potassium and Manganese. Very healthy!
Try something new today!
To be fair, this was a bit of a risk to pick up another strange fruit to try and I probably wouldn’t have done so in the local market, but they were on offer in the supermarket so I thought I would give them a try. It was worth the adventure. Very tasty. I shall be buying them again.
