The River Safari

What is it?

The River Safari is a river themed zoo and aquarium covering 10 different ecosystems built over 12 hectares (30 acres) and nestled between its two counterparts, the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari. It is the smallest of the three parks. It is the first of its kind in Asia and features freshwater exhibits and a river boat ride as its main highlights. The safari was built at a cost of S$160m and received over 1 million visitors annually.

It opened in phases between 2012 and 2014:

29 November 2012 (Giant Panda Forest)
3 April 2013 (Soft opening)
28 February 2014 (Official opening)

It has 7,500 animals covering 240 species, numerous of which are endangered. There are also over 400 plant species.

The Amazon Flooded Forest exhibit, which houses the manatees and various South American fish, contains 2,000m (71,000 cu ft) of water and has a glass viewing panel of 22 m × 4 m (72 ft × 13 ft). Its volume and the size of the viewing panel are both world records for a freshwater aquarium.

One of the main attractions is a pair of male and female giant pandas – Kai Kai (凯凯) and Jia Jia (嘉嘉) which are on a ten-year loan from China (from 2012). The pandas are housed in a specially constructed climate-controlled enclosure which change throughout the four seasons emulating their original environment. Visitors have to be extremely quiet when entering these exhibits in order not to disturb the animals.

The park features a short boat ride called the Amazon River Quest. It features over 30 wildlife species from the Amazon River– some of which are more elusive than others. Tickets are priced at S$5 for adults and S$3 for children aged three to 12, on top of River Safari admission.

There is also 15-minute Reservoir Cruise on the Upper Seletar Reservoir. It is tranquil when the audio stops. Each cruise can take up to 40 passengers and runs at 15-minute intervals from 10.30am to 6.00pm daily. The boats are wheelchair-friendly.
